If you’re a cancer patient who calls Nantucket home, even for just a few weeks during the year, you’ll be both amazed and comforted by the Cancer Care and Infusion Center at Mass General Cancer Center at Nantucket Cottage Hospital. Developed in partnership with the Mass General Cancer Center, our program brings a team of cancer specialists to the island on a weekly basis for patient consultation and treatment. This allows our patients to receive much of their care, including chemotherapy treatments, right here on Nantucket.
Ugne Aleknaite, a Nantucket-based Certified Nurse Practitioner, coordinates with Mass General, Nantucket Cottage Hospital, and on- and off-island providers to care for Nantucket cancer patients and their families on a daily basis. This collaboration ensures patients receive personalized, intimate care, while receiving state-of-the-art treatment. Plus, our team of nurses at the infusion center provide care that is rooted in one-to-one relationships with our patients. No matter what form of cancer you may have, no matter what medical or therapeutic services you may need, you will be surrounded by care.
Our cancer care services include:
- Outpatient chemotherapy and immunotherapy
- Consultations spanning a wide variety of cancer subspecialties, including head/neck, breast, colon, lung, melanoma, lymphoma/leukemia
- Collaboration with your primary oncologist from MGH or other institutions
- Treatment plan development
- Advance screening via CT scans and MRIs
- Oncology lab panels and tests
- Specialized cancer nutrition and dietary support
- Palliative care and support services
We recognize that cancer is a family diagnosis and caring for cancer patients requires a lot of coordination for the patient and the family. Every summer, swimmers of all ages and skill levels are invited to take part in Swim Across America – Nantucket Island Open Water Swim at Jetties Beach to help support cancer treatment and patient care on Nantucket at Nantucket Cottage Hospital and Palliative and Supportive Care of Nantucket. Through the efforts of these organizations and the support of SAA – Nantucket, residents and visitors alike can receive outstanding cancer treatment and support on the island. Since 2013, over $3 million has been raised to help our families, friends, and neighbors battle cancer and receive as much of their care as possible on-island. Meet Jeannie Critchley
In April 2015, Jeannie Critchley was coming to the end of another school year and looking ahead to summer on Nantucket. But Critchley, who has been a teacher at Nantucket Elementary School for nearly 30 years, was about to receive some health news that would change her life. After a routine mammogram at Nantucket Cottage Hospital and follow-up tests, Critchley was diagnosed with stage three breast cancer. After the initial shock and deluge of information about her condition, Critchley and her physicians agreed on a plan that included two surgeries, chemotherapy, and radiation. Read more.
