Focusing on Nantucket Cottage Hospital’s campaign to build a new hospital, Milestones magazine is designed to provide an update on the project and celebrate the donors and volunteers who are making this historic initiative a reality. Published in November 2016, our third issue highlights the Percelay Family’s incredible gift of $10 million, plus we give readers a glimpse into what the new hospital will look like inside. Chris and Carmen Carey came to Nantucket 10 years ago and have made the island their home. In that time they have also come to rely on the services of Nantucket Cottage Hospital for everything from emergency and primary care, to specialty physician services. For the Careys, Nantucket Cottage Hospital is one of the main factors that have given them the confidence to build a new life on the island.

Chris, who owns the home building and caretaking firm The Carey Company, has type 1 diabetes, and gets his regular blood work done on-island at the hospital. He’s also been a patient in the emergency department after a carpentry accident. Carmen, who works at RJ Millers – a salon and spa – was able to stay on the island to see a visiting podiatrist at Nantucket Cottage Hospital for treatment of plantar fasciitis.

“We love being part of the year-round community and we know how important it is to have a good hospital,” Carmen said. “So we hope you’ll join us by supporting The NCH Fund, too.”

Every year, the Nantucket Cottage Hospital Foundation publishes its annual Report to Our Donors to celebrate, highlight, and thank our donors and volunteers. This report is filled with the names of people who recognize that life as we know it on Nantucket wouldn’t be the same without a hospital that meets the needs of a thriving year-round community. It’s one of the ways we acknowledge the hundreds of men, women and children who generously share with us their talents and treasures as volunteers, donors and staff. Few people are better acquainted with Nantucket Cottage Hospital from a patient’s perspective than island tile-layer and fisherman David Goodman.

Over his many years on the island, Goodman has been a patient in the Emergency Department after a cerebral hemorrhage. He’s stayed for a week on the inpatient floor suffering from liver disease. And he’s utilized the hospital’s outpatient rehabilitation services frequently for his recoveries, as well as countless visits to Dr. Tim Lepore’s primary care office.

“I got better care here than I would have got anywhere,” Goodman said. “I had incredible attention. It’s a real personal touch being here, and what I mean by that is the nurses and doctors went out of their way to take care of me. It was beyond ‘I’m just doing my job.’ and that was a big thing for me.” (more…)
